Clínica San Lucas, Lempira
The clinic in Gracias operates as a Honduran non-profit organization known as the Asociación Clínica San Lucas Lempira. They serve those with financial need in western Honduras, and they do this in five main ways:
Medical Care
Local staff works on site year-round to provide extensive high-quality care, in both basic and specialty health care areas.
Community Health Programs
In addition to care at the clinic itself, the staff engages in community health initiatives in which care is delivered to those in need by meeting them where they are. Programs meet both immediate needs and seek to grow the capacity for medical care in the surrounding areas.
Immediate needs are met through projects involving the building of latrines, clean water storage, and medical and dental care for school children, pregnant women, and inmates in the prison in Gracias. The capacity for medical and dental care is grown through efforts like community staff training, dental hygiene training for school children, and the establishment of community pharmacies in more remote areas. The diversity of programming speaks to both the great variety of needs in the region, as well as to the strength and devotion of the staff.
Medical Brigades from the U.S.
Each year, medical professionals from the U.S. donate their time, money, and energy to commit to serving the people of western Honduras. These brigades typically run during October, November, January, and February, with additional brigades taking place throughout the year. Brigades are typically a one-week commitment, with the possibility of staying multiple weeks in some instances. They are designed to respond to the needs of the population while utilizing the expertise of the medical professionals involved. Many of those served travel from distant regions of Honduras to receive care, and many have waited a long time for their needs to be met. Often, these patients simply would not receive this care if not for the brigades.
Economic Development
Economic development programming provides micro-loans to allow some of the poorest families in the region to create their own sustainable businesses. These efforts are themselves sustainable by design, and they provide opportunities for families that otherwise would not have this necessary support.
Church Planting
The clinic works with established churches as well as with church plants through their Ecclesiastical Assistance Program to advance the sharing of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This can include the training of missionaries and pastors, as well as supporting the success of other church projects.
There are many other ways in which the clinic serves the community through relationships with individuals and institutions in the surrounding area. If you’d like to consider experiencing these efforts first hand, you can find more detailed information about going on a brigade here.
